Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about the Human Library, being a Reader or a Book, and our local events.
About the Human Library
What is a Human Library?
The Human Library is an international movement where people are the “Books.” Instead of reading pages, you have a live conversation with someone about their real-life experiences, challenges, and perspectives.
Why is it called “Voices of Ingham Human Library”?
We began as the Ingham County Human Library. In 2025 we updated our name to highlight the diverse voices in our community while continuing our mission of fostering understanding through conversation.
Is this like storytelling or a lecture?
Not exactly. Human Library events are personal, one‑on‑one or small‑group conversations where you can ask respectful questions and learn from someone’s lived experience.
For Readers (Attendees)
How do I borrow a Book?
At an event, you’ll see a list of available Books with short descriptions. Choose one, and an event host will introduce you. Conversations usually last 20–30 minutes.
Can I record my conversation with a Book?
Only if the Book has given explicit consent for recording or photography, and the event organizers have approved it.
I’m nervous, will I know what to ask?
Absolutely. Our Books are used to helping Readers get started. You can begin with simple questions or just listen.
For Potential Books (Volunteers)
Who can become a Book?
Anyone with a personal story that could help others better understand a lived experience, challenge stereotypes, or break down stigma.
Do I have to share everything about my life?
No. You choose what to share and may decline any questions you’re not comfortable answering.
How often would I participate?
You decide—some Books volunteer for one event, others participate multiple times a year.
