Real people. Real stories. Real change.

About Us

Who we are

We bring together people from all walks of life for open, respectful conversations that challenge prejudice, build understanding, and celebrate the diversity of our community.
Through our events, you can “borrow” a person instead of a book — listening to real-life experiences that broaden your perspective and inspire connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the Human Library, being a Reader or a Book, and our local events.

About the Human Library

What is a Human Library?

The Human Library is an international movement where people are the “Books.” Instead of reading pages, you have a live conversation with someone about their real-life experiences, challenges, and perspectives.

We began as the Ingham County Human Library. In 2025 we updated our name to highlight the diverse voices in our community while continuing our mission of fostering understanding through conversation.

Not exactly. Human Library events are personal, one‑on‑one or small‑group conversations where you can ask respectful questions and learn from someone’s lived experience.

For Readers (Attendees)

How do I borrow a Book?

At an event, you’ll see a list of available Books with short descriptions. Choose one, and an event host will introduce you. Conversations usually last 20–30 minutes.

Only if the Book has given explicit consent for recording or photography, and the event organizers have approved it.

Absolutely. Our Books are used to helping Readers get started. You can begin with simple questions or just listen.

For Potential Books (Volunteers)

Who can become a Book?

Anyone with a personal story that could help others better understand a lived experience, challenge stereotypes, or break down stigma.

No. You choose what to share and may decline any questions you’re not comfortable answering.

You decide—some Books volunteer for one event, others participate multiple times a year.

Event Logistics

Are events free to attend?

Yes. All Human Library events hosted by Voices of Ingham Human Library are free and open to the public.

Visit our Events page for dates, locations, and descriptions.

Yes. We welcome guests—and many people enjoy attending with someone so they can discuss the experience afterward.
